Why is hemp oil ideal for horses?

Hemp oil is extracted by cold-pressing hemp seeds, the seeds of industrial hemp. This extraction method preserves all the fatty acids and micronutrients naturally present in the seed, without the use of heat or chemical solvents.

Hemp has an exceptional lipid profile, with an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of close to 3:1, which is considered optimal for equine nutrition. This balanced ratio, which is difficult to achieve with other vegetable oils, makes hemp oil a valuable nutritional supplement to support the horse’s overall health.

Hemp oil and omega-3: benefits for horse health

Omega-3 fatty acids play a central role in many biological functions in horses, including cell membrane integrity, the inflammatory response, and the quality of the coat and hooves. A regular intake of high-quality omega-3s helps maintain good overall physical condition and supports recovery after exercise.

The modern horse diet — hay, pellets and concentrated feeds — is often high in omega-6 and low in omega-3. Aubiose hemp oil helps naturally rebalance this ratio, without the need for synthetic supplements.

Supporting the horse’s immune system with Aubiose hemp oil

The essential fatty acids found in hemp oil contribute to the normal functioning of the horse’s immune system. Regular intake supports the body’s natural defences, particularly during seasonal changes, periods of intense stress (competition, transport, weaning) or when transitioning into the warmer months.

Hemp seed oil also contains natural vitamin E (tocopherols), an antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative stress, an important factor in sport horses subjected to repeated physical exertion.

Hemp oil to support the horse’s nervous system balance

Stress is one of the most common challenges faced by horse owners: horses that are reactive to transport, competition, changes in their environment or social interactions within a herd. When incorporated into the daily ration, Aubiose hemp oil may help promote better nervous system balance and a less pronounced response to stress factors.

This benefit is not related to CBD or any active cannabinoid. Our oil is produced from hemp varieties with a THC content of <0.2%, in accordance with European regulations. Its action is nutritional: omega-3 fatty acids contribute to neuronal membrane fluidity and the balance of the stress response.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hemp Oil for Horses

Does Aubiose hemp oil contain CBD?

No, only trace amounts (<0.01%). Our oil is extracted from hemp seeds — the seeds of the hemp plant — rather than from the flowers or leaves. It is a conventional food-grade oil, rich in essential fatty acids, with no psychoactive effects or pharmacological properties.

Is hemp oil permitted in equestrian competition?

Cold-pressed hemp seed oil does not contain any prohibited substances regulated by equestrian federations (FEI, FFE). The THC content is below the analytical detection threshold. However, we recommend checking with your federation before use during competition periods, as regulations may change.

How long does it take to see the effects?

The effects of a food supplement containing essential fatty acids are generally seen over the medium term: the first signs may appear after 3 to 6 weeks (coat condition, recovery), with effects on overall balance developing over 2 to 3 months. This is not an immediate-action product — it is intended to form part of a long-term nutritional approach.

Can hemp oil be combined with other supplements?

Yes, in most cases. Aubiose hemp oil is a lipid-based food supplement and can easily be incorporated into a ration that already contains other supplements. If you have any concerns about interactions with ongoing veterinary treatment or specific supplements, consult your vet or an equine nutritionist.

My horse is a fussy eater — will they accept hemp oil?

Hemp seed oil has a slightly nutty flavour that is generally well accepted by horses. If your horse is initially reluctant, introduce it gradually by adding a few millilitres to their ration during the first few days, then increase the amount over 1 to 2 weeks. You can also mix it with a palatable feed, such as mash or muesli, to make it easier to accept.
